Mythology, History & Important Context

Historical & Cultural Context

The name Baphomet became notorious in medieval Templar accusations, but the familiar goat-headed image did not yet exist. Trial testimony emerged in a coercive environment and does not prove a standardized cult.

Major Myths & Stories

Éliphas Lévi created the Sabbatic Goat as a composite of animal and human, masculine and feminine, matter and spirit, and upward and downward forces.

Later Interpretation / Important Context

Later occultists, Thelemites, Satanists, Pagans, witches, artists, and esoteric practitioners interpreted Baphomet differently. The later Sigil of Baphomet is not Lévi’s original image.

Personal Notes

Worship & Historical Practice

No ancient Baphomet cult is established.
