Moon Magick Grimoire

New Moon Quick Ritual

A simple 5-minute ritual for setting intentions, planting seeds, and inviting new beginnings.

Overview

The New Moon is traditionally used in modern witchcraft for rest, renewal, intention-setting, fresh starts, and beginning a new cycle. Astronomically, the New Moon occurs when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, so the side facing Earth is not visibly illuminated. This quick ritual is designed as a simple, accessible practice for planting symbolic seeds, naming an intention, and taking a first small step toward new beginnings. It is spiritual and reflective, not a guarantee of outcomes.

Best For

  • Setting intentions
  • New beginnings
  • Focus and clarity
  • Fresh energy
  • Resetting after a difficult cycle
  • Planting symbolic seeds for future growth

What You Need

  • Black or white candle
  • Clear quartz
  • Moonstone or obsidian
  • Rosemary
  • Bay leaf
  • Small bowl or dish
  • Paper and pen

5-Minute Ritual

  1. 1Take one deep breath, quiet your mind, and gently sweep your hands, rosemary, or another safe cleansing tool over the space with intention.
  2. 2Light the candle safely. Welcome the New Moon’s energy and focus on what you are ready to begin.
  3. 3Hold clear quartz with moonstone or obsidian. Breathe deeply and picture the path opening ahead.
  4. 4Write one clear intention on your paper and say aloud: “Under the New Moon, I plant the seed of what I am ready to grow.”
  5. 5Place the paper beneath the bowl, thank the Moon, and sit in stillness for a final moment. When finished, extinguish the candle safely.

Optional Add-Ons

  • Add a pinch of cinnamon to the bowl.
  • Place moon water nearby.
  • Burn the bay leaf safely only if you have a fire-safe container, ventilation, and a safe setting.
  • Add a small charm, key, or token to represent the first step toward your intention.

Closing Reflection

New beginnings live in quiet places. Plant your intentions today and trust what is coming.

Safety & Practical Notes

Use a fire-safe candle holder and never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep herbs, paper, oils, sleeves, hair, pets, and curtains away from flame. Burning bay leaves or cinnamon can create smoke and sparks; skip burning if your space, lungs, pets, or household make smoke unsafe. Do not ingest herbs or crystals as part of this ritual. Obsidian and other stones may chip or have sharp edges, so handle carefully. If using oils, use only candle-safe methods and keep oil away from the wick and open flame.
