Create a Simple Sigil

A sigil is a personally constructed symbol used to represent an intention. This five-minute method starts with one short word, removes vowels and repeated letters, combines what remains, and simplifies the result until it becomes a symbol you can redraw from memory.

Create a Simple Sigil

A sigil turns a word into a visual cue. The popular letter-reduction method belongs to modern Western occult practice, especially twentieth-century sigil work and later chaos magic. Symbols and seals are much older and culturally diverse, but this exact method should not be presented as ancient or universal. The finished symbol can function spiritually, magically, psychologically, or simply as a private reminder of the intention it represents.

Do not equate a personal sigil with every historical seal, rune, bindrune, veve, yantra, talisman, or sacred symbol. A personal design built from your own letters avoids copying a culturally specific sacred system without context.

  • Keep vowels if removing them makes the process frustrating.
  • Use a digital drawing app.
  • Build only from straight lines.
  • Say the word silently.
  • Skip the candle entirely.
  • Symbolic/personal practice, not medical, legal, or financial advice.
  • Privacy is optional.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Use your own symbols and respect traditions.
  • Pause if hard feelings arise. A focus sigil does not replace treatment, medication, accommodations, professional support, or practical planning.
  • Can I explain this symbol in one sentence? Does the intention point toward something I can act on? Do I want to keep, revise, or retire it?
