Shadow Work Grimoire

The Inner Critic

Daily Affirmation & Journal Prompts

Overview

The inner critic is the voice that turns mistakes, uncertainty, or vulnerability into harsh judgments about who we are. It may repeat standards learned from family, school, work, culture, or earlier experiences, but hearing the voice does not make every message true. This worksheet helps you recognize its language, understand what activates it, and practice a response that is honest without being cruel.

Intention

I choose compassion over criticism. I am worthy of kindness, especially from myself. I am learning, growing, and enough.

Daily Affirmation

I choose compassion over criticism. I am worthy of kindness, especially from myself. I am learning, growing, and enough.

Guided Journal Prompts

  1. What does my inner critic sound like, and what words does it use most often?
  2. Where did I learn the beliefs or standards that my inner critic repeats to me?
  3. How does my inner critic show up during stress, failure, or moments of vulnerability?
  4. In what ways does my inner critic keep me from taking risks or trying new things?
  5. What would I say to a close friend who spoke to themselves the way I speak to myself?

Reflection of the Day

What would happen if I treated myself today with the same kindness I offer others?

Practical Integration

Write down one critical thought exactly as it appeared. Beside it, write a response that keeps any useful information while removing insults, absolutes, and impossible standards. Use that revised sentence the next time the same criticism returns.

Gentle Caution

The goal is not to force positive thinking or silence every critical thought. Pause if the exercise becomes overwhelming, and seek supportive conversation if harsh self-talk is difficult to manage alone.
