Shadow Work Grimoire
People-Pleasing 3
When keeping the peace costs your peace.Overview
People-pleasing is a pattern of prioritizing other people's comfort, approval, expectations, or emotional reactions over your own needs, truth, or limits. This reflection focuses on the internal experience of people-pleasing: how it feels in the body, whose approval feels most powerful, and what begins to change when a person gives themselves permission to prioritize their own needs.
Intention
When keeping the peace costs your peace.
Daily Affirmation
My needs are valid. I can be kind and still choose myself.
Guided Journal Prompts
- In what situations do I find myself saying “yes” when I really want to say “no”?
- What am I afraid might happen if I disappoint someone?
- How does people pleasing show up in my thoughts, behaviors, or physical feelings?
- Whose approval have I been seeking, and why does it feel so important to me?
- What would change in my life if I gave myself permission to prioritize my own needs?
Reflection of the Day
The part of you that people pleases often learned it as a way to feel safe, accepted, or loved. Instead of judging this part, thank it for trying to protect you. Now ask what it truly needs from you today.
Practical Integration
Pay attention to what happens in your body when you want to say no but feel pulled to say yes. Notice tension, guilt, anxiety, or urgency. Practice a short pause before answering requests. Even a small pause helps create room for a more honest response.
Gentle Caution
People-pleasing can be deeply tied to past environments where staying agreeable or useful helped a person feel safer. If someone is in a coercive, abusive, or unsafe relationship, direct confrontation may not be the safest first step. This entry is educational and reflective, not psychotherapy.
Research Basis
The reflective framing is grounded in the general understanding of people-pleasing as chronic prioritization of others at the expense of one's own needs or well-being. The journal questions and reflection are original approved writing for this Grimoire entry.
